September 29th strike: transport almost normal, schools more disrupted
The public sector strike planned for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, is expected to primarily disrupt schools, the employment agency France Travail, and several other public services. Public transport in the Île-de-France region is expected to operate generally normally, with some disruptions anticipated on a few lines. Unions are particularly keen to secure meas regarding salaries and to protest the announced freeze on the civil service pay index in the 2027 budget.
Transport services were generally preserved, except on certain lines.
The RATP anticipates normal service on the metro and RER. However, the CGT-RATP union has filed a strike notice effective Monday, September 28, at 7:00 PM. According to information provided by the companies, disruptions are expected to be limited.
At SNCF, TGV and Intercités trains are expected to run normally. TER regional train service is reported to be almost normal. In the Île-de-France region, disruptions are expected on RER lines C, D, and E, as well as on Transilien lines R and V; other lines should operate normally.
Schools: a mobilization announced in primary schools
The Snuipp-FSU, the leading primary school teachers’ union, estimates that 40% of teachers could go on strike. In the affected schools, local authorities are supposed to organize a minimum childcare service, as the Minister of National Education, Édouard Geffray, reminded everyone.
The level of mobilization in middle and high schools remains more difficult to predict: secondary school teachers are not required to declare their intention to strike in advance. The general secretary of the Snes-FSU union, Sophie Vénétitay, nevertheless anticipated a well-supported mobilization, particularly around salary demands.
High school students, at the call of the USL, are also planning blockades, while student organizations have announced their participation in the movement in universities.
France Travail, hospitals and emergency services also concerned
Ten trade unions affiliated with France Travail, representing almost all of the unions within the institution, are calling for a strike and demonstrations. They are demanding wage increases and raising concerns about the impact they believe the reorganizations and budget cuts will have on staff and users. They are also worried about the future two-tiered support system for job seekers and the deployment of artificial intelligence without a collective agreement.
In hospitals, all the unions representing hospital staff have called for mobilization to demand pay and resources commensurate with their duties. Professional firefighters are also expected to join the movement. Nine representative unions are demanding, in particular, the creation of 21,000 new positions, improved health and safety meas for firefighters, and a refocusing of their responsibilities. Several firefighters had already demonstrated in Paris on Monday, September 28.
The police unions Alliance, Un1té, and Unsa are also expected to participate in the day’s action, according to information reported by Le Parisien. Their demands concern salaries, risk allowances, and staffing levels.
A national mobilization around wages
The CGT, FO, CFDT, UNSA, FSU, Solidaires, CFE-CGC, and FA-FP unions are calling on public sector workers to mobilize. They are demanding improved pay and working conditions, in a context where they denounce the loss of purchasing power and the planned freeze on the index point in 2027.
At least 155 demonstrations are planned across the country. This number is comparable to the large-scale mobilization of public sector workers in December 2024.
