Tennis: Viktorija Golubic qualifies for the second round in Beijing
Viktorija Golubic secured a decisive victory in her opening match at the WTA 1000 in Beijing. On Wednesday, September 30, the Swiss player defeated American Elvina Kalieva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the second round of the tournament being held in China.
A well-executed opening
Ranked 67th in the world before the tournament, Golubic returned to competition after her first-round exit at the US Open on August 31. Facing Kalieva, ranked 117th and a lucky loser in the main draw, she wrapped up the match in under 90 minutes. The Zurich native did, however, lose her serve twice in the first set before taking control of the rallies. In total, she managed six breaks of serve. The score and the round played are also reported by the tournament’s live coverage. ( lequipe.fr )
Stearns in the next round
Golubic will face Peyton Stearns, the 28th seed and first-round bye. The two players met earlier this year in Miami, with the American winning 7-6, 6-4. This time, a place in the third round is at stake. ( wtatennis.com )
Two Swiss women in the painting
Belinda Bencic is also competing in Beijing. The No. 9 seed, she is scheduled to begin her second-round match against the winner of the game between China’s Yushan Shao and Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova. Golubic’s victory therefore guarantees a Swiss presence in the second round, while Bencic awaits her opponent. ( wtatennis.com )
