Four hospitals in Marseille are among the best healthcare centers in the world.
In Marseille, four hospitals are recognized in Newsweek’s 2027 international ranking of the best specialized hospitals. La Timone hospital is ranked 47th in neurosurgery and 67th in cardiac surgery, compared to 83rd in the latter specialty the previous year. The North Hospital is ranked 238th in cardiology.

A distinction that does not, by itself, guarantee the quality of care
Newsweek compiles its rankings based on several indicators. For oncology, the IPC specifies that the methodology notably considers reputation among international healthcare professionals, accreditations and certifications, as well as the use of questionnaires on patient experience and quality of life. However, Newsweek’s ranking remains an editorial assessment, not an official certification of the quality of care.
For residents of Marseille and surrounding towns, these rankings primarily signal the international visibility of several local teams. They do not, in themselves, mean that access to care or patient pathways will change. The AP-HM, which includes hospitals such as La Timone, La Conception, and Hôpital Nord, also urges caution in interpreting these results.
No changes announced for patients
As of the date of publication of these results, no organizational or care-related changes linked to the ranking have been announced. This ranking does not replace the medical and practical information provided by healthcare facilities to patients. For healthcare needs, the choice of service depends on the medical situation and the referral from healthcare professionals, and not solely on ranking position.
