English-Life Sciences: an educational investigation into a murder uses three analytical techniques
A CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) sequence in English and Life and Earth Sciences invites students to step into the shoes of investigators to solve a fictional murder. The program includes three experiments involving a psychotropic substance, pollen, and inks, followed by the creation of a two-minute video.
Analytical techniques used in investigations
Designed for first-year students, this activity can also be considered from the second year onwards. It is based on an investigation scenario to implement several scientific experiments.
The students first search for a psychotropic substance using the Ouchterlony test. They then examine pollen under a microscope and analyze ink using chromatography. These three steps constitute the practical stages of the sequence.
A video to showcase the work
The project culminates in the production of a two-minute video. The instructions emphasize careful editing rather than a simple on-camera presentation.
The Edubase sheet, dated September 28, 2026, describes an activity that combines English and Life and Earth Sciences around a scenario of investigation and scientific manipulations.
