Returning to Beijing after eleven years, Djokovic is aiming for a long run in the tournament
Novak Djokovic returns to the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, eleven years after his last appearance. In comments reported on September 28, 2026, the Serb spoke of his attachment to the Chinese public, while clearly stating his objective: to win and go as far as possible.
A highly anticipated return to Beijing
Djokovic said he has fond memories of the tournament and particularly enjoyed playing in the Chinese capital. He also highlighted the support he receives from the fans, both in practice and during matches, and the atmosphere they create around him.
This return is part of a broader relationship with the Chinese public, to whom the former world number one says he is attached. But the plea of returning to Beijing is not, according to him, an end in itself: his presence in a professional tournament also fulfills a sporting ambition.
Feelings that need to be confirmed in a match
When asked about his physical condition after his defeat at the US Open the previous month, Djokovic said he was satisfied with how he felt in practice. However, he pointed out that an official match is a different challenge than a few games played in practice.
His initial impressions are therefore positive, but the Serb is reserving judgment until after the competition. The Beijing tournament should allow him to test his abilities in match situations.
An undiminished ambition
Djokovic has won the tournament six times and has never lost there, according to reports. He doesn’t intend to simply be there to play in front of a crowd; he wants to beat his opponents and reach the later rounds.
The former world number one says he maintains high standards for himself. He intends to pursue his goals as long as he believes he can compete at the highest level.
