AMD acquires World Labs and integrates Fei-Fei Li into its AI modeling strategy
AMD has reached an agreement to acquire World Labs, a startup specializing in AI models applied to three-dimensional environments. Announced on September 28, 2026, the deal is valued at approximately $8.2 billion and will be settled in stock. It is not yet finalized; completion is expected by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
What’s changing for AMD
The processor and graphics card manufacturer isn’t just adding a startup to its portfolio. It intends to integrate World Labs’ researchers and expertise into its teams to better anticipate the needs of future AI models and guide the development of its hardware, software, and systems. This is the objective outlined by AMD in its official press release of September 28 .
Fei-Fei Li, co-founder and head of World Labs, is set to join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientific officer, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. The agreement also includes the addition of a specialized research team, as AMD seeks to expand its business beyond selling artificial intelligence chips.
What are world models used for?
A world model aims to produce or represent three-dimensional environments from elements such as text, images, or videos. According to World Labs’ official description, its models can generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D scenes. Its product, Marble, presented by the company as its first product, allows users to create 3D environments from various types of input, including images and text descriptions.
These systems differ from a conventional image generator: they aim to create a coherent spatial scene that can be explored or modified, rather than a single static image. Ultimately, such tools could be useful for digital creation, simulation, or robotics. However, this does not mean that they perfectly reproduce the real world or that they already allow a robot to act reliably in all situations.
What is confirmed — and what remains to be established
The amount, the stock payment, the anticipated timeline, and Fei-Fei Li’s stated role are detailed in AMD’s communication. The company presents the acquisition as a way to improve its understanding of the needs of emerging business models and guide its future technology choices. This is AMD’s stated strategy, not an independent assessment of the transaction’s impact.
The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. AMD did not detail in its announcement the specific changes expected for World Labs products, customers, or users of Marble. Therefore, the announcement does not establish any immediate changes to service or availability. The actual value of the deal will depend, in particular, on the integration of the team and how its work is translated—or not—into AMD’s products and platforms.
What this changes for users
In the short term, there’s no indication that AMD software or hardware users will see any new features directly related to this acquisition. The real issue is medium-term: strengthening AMD’s research capabilities in a branch of AI that could be used for simulation and physical systems. The applications, performance, and availability dates of future technologies have not been specified.
