Temperatures are expected to reach up to 32°C in France on Tuesday, September 29, before the return of rain on Wednesday.
An unusual heat wave for the end of September was expected in France on Tuesday, September 29, according to forecasts published by La Chaîne Météo on September 28, 2026. Maximum temperatures could reach 30 to 32 °C from the Southwest to the center of the country, before the arrival of more unsettled weather from Wednesday.
High temperatures for the season
The heat had already arrived on Monday, particularly in Alsace and the Pyrenean foothills. La Chaîne Météo recorded 31°C in Colmar, 31.6°C in Villé, in the Bas-Rhin, 32°C in Bustince, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and 33°C in Vinça, in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
Tuesday was expected to be the peak of the week’s heatwave. Maximum temperatures were forecast to reach between 26 and 30°C across much of the country, with highs of 30 to 32°C from the Southwest towards the center. Temperatures close to 30°C were also possible as far north as the Paris Basin and Alsace. The deviation from seasonal averages was expected to be locally significant.
The situation was linked to a south to southwest flow associated with a deep Atlantic depression, the weather bulletin indicated.
A change in the weather is expected as early as Wednesday.
This warm spell was expected to be brief. From Wednesday, a cold front associated with the low-pres system was forecast to move across the west of the country, bringing rain and thunderstorms. Southwesterly winds were expected to strengthen, while temperatures were set to begin falling from the west.
The deterioration was expected to continue on Wednesday and Thursday in many regions. These figures correspond to the forecasts published on September 28, and not to an assessment made after the forecast date.
