High school student protests: 625 arrests and 83 law enforcement officers injured on Wednesday
The student protests spread on Wednesday, September 30, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. He reported disruptions in 356 schools, 625 arrests, and 83 injured law enforcement officers. The government also announced a consultation process for the students.
Incidents reported in several establishments
During a joint press conference with the Minister of National Education, Édouard Geffray, Laurent Nuñez reported an intensification of the movement and violence in certain areas. According to his count, staff members were targeted and intrusions occurred at a high school in Rennes and another in Lyon.
The minister also indicated that 625 people had been arrested during the day. He reported that 83 members of the security forces had been injured.
After high school students were injured during school blockades, the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was tasked with three investigations. Laurent Nuñez considered that the police intervention had been proportionate.
Consultations announced for Monday
To try and calm the situation, the government plans to launch a consultation platform on Monday to which high school students can contribute. Édouard Geffray announced that they could express their requests, concerns, and demands there, presenting them according to their local area.
A national feedback event should then allow the government to present structured responses, the Minister of National Education stated.
