Homemade candles are appealing because they offer an accessible creative activity for personalizing your decor.
Making homemade candles is presented as an accessible creative activity, requiring minimal equipment and with kits available for around 20 euros. Julie Tomeï became interested in it after discovering candles bearing the image of the Pope, made in Nantes. But the homemade market also exists alongside a high-end French market, while the composition of scented candles calls for caution.
A manufacturing process that requires little equipment
To make a candle, you need wax—either shavings or wax recovered from old candles—a wick, and a container. The wax, melted in a double boiler or microwave, is then poured into the container and left to dry.
Kits sold for around 20 euros allow people to get started with this practice. It offers the possibility of personalizing your decor without necessarily buying a ready-made candle. Recycling used candles is another option mentioned by Julie Tomeï on the show « Bonjour ! avec vous ».
Composition, a point of vigilance
Making your own candles doesn’t mean you can neglect the products you use. Scented candles, in particular, deserve special attention: TF1info warns against certain compositions, especially those containing paraffin, a petroleum derivative.
The media outlet recommends using suitable products and regularly ventilating your home. These precautions should be considered when choosing wax and fragrances for candles.
A market between homemade creations and luxury candles
At the other end of the market, high-end French candles remain a luxury item. Some brands manufactured near Marseille, present since the 1960s, are exported internationally. Their creations were reportedly used at Harry and Meghan’s wedding.
The fragrances featured this fall combine notes of blond leather, vanilla, and amber, or more floral and powdery scents reminiscent of moonstone. A high-end candle costs around 65 euros, according to TF1info. Refillable models are available for 50 euros; a candle can provide up to 50 hours of burn time.
